Students' Union

Why get involved?

With such a large University comes a very large range of volunteering opportunities, with an even larger impact on both the local and international community.  Last year, the Students’ Union’s Raise and Give (RAG) society raised over £200,000 to support various charities. Being part of achievements like these are not only great for your CV, but are personally rewarding, because it’s great to know that you’re making a difference.

As well as RAG, you can get involved with Access All Areas, which improves access to education, and Student Action which runs a large number of weekly and one off projects, such as volunteering at a women’s shelter and working with young adults with learning disabilities.

Whatever you’re passionate about, you’ll be able to take steps towards making a change with the large range of volunteering opportunities on offer at the Students’ Union.  Volunteering is a great way to gain new skills, make new friends, explore new places and experiences, and have fun.

How do I get involved?

All students can get involved with the Students’ Union volunteering opportunities. All you have to do is get in touch with the relevant volunteering organisation or sign up to the volunteer hub. Visit the Students’ Union website to find out more.

How do I set up my own project?

If there’s a cause that you are passionate about but no volunteering opportunities to do with it, you can organise your own project, which is a great way to build your leadership and organisation skills.

Student Media

At the Students’ Union there are three large media societies ran by students. In fact, The Mancunion , the student ran newspaper, is so large that it has a readership of 20,000 students. As well as the Mancunion, you can get involved in the radio station Fuse FM, with two modern broadcasting and recording studios within the Students’ Union building, or Fuse TV, which brings relevant and high quality programs to the student community.

Any student can get involved with any of the student media platforms, and it’s a great way to get some experience if you want to pursue a career in journalism or broadcast media. Even if you’re not interested in pursuing a career in the media, getting involved in creating student media is a fantastic opportunity to get creative, make friends and draw attention to issues that you think are important.
