Military Education Committee

Who are the MEC?

The Manchester and Salford Universities’ Military Education Committee (MEC) provide an oversight of the three training units on behalf of The University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Salford. The MEC receives formal annual reports from each of the training units and maintains interaction between committee members and the training units throughout the year.

The MEC is also a member of COMEC, the national committee that oversees the provision of training within the University Officer Cadet System.

The three service units are:

- The Manchester and Salford Universities’ Officer Training Corps (UOTC)

- The Manchester and Salford Universities’ Royal Navy Unit (URNU)

- The Manchester and Salford Universities’ Air Squadron (UAS)

Students of the three Universities and higher education colleges in the area may apply to join any of the units on a voluntary basis.

What do we do?

The Principles of the committee are:

  1. To oversee the activities of each of the service units and ensure they are running smoothly.
  2. To assist unit commanding officers in communicating effectively with the academic communities of the universities.
  3. To ensure that undergraduates are managing the demands of their degree and the training activities effectively.
